Because I am fond of the Mahabharata and other Sanskrit texts, because I write about them, someone once said to me, “you should have been born in that age. Wouldn’t you prefer it to this terrible Kali Yuga ?”

Actually, no, I would not prefer it at all.

In the old texts Kali is a dark and shocking age. The Mahabharata and the Puranas have has long descriptions of it. Life spans are shorter, disease and avarice and violence is rampant. The world is full of false teachers and corrupt politicians, greedy governments and fanatical people. Values change, morality vanishes, society breaks down. Would anyone in their right minds want to be born in this fragmented age ?

Yes, I do prefer it. There are reasons, and they are the ones which caused those old authors such sorrow – the break up of society and family, the disappearance of morality…
